Intro  |  F.A.Q.  |   Users

Crunchland.com started up as a dialup Bulletin Board System (BBS) housed in a basement in a Washington, D.C. suburb in 1990.  Home to dozens of dedicated users, the Crunchland BBS hosted a bunch of games and other activities.  It also spawned a close group of folks that started getting together for happy hours, movies and other stuff.

Games people played on the Crunchland BBS included cards, a variation of Scrabble, and a Multi-User-Dungeon type activity called Legend of the Red Dragon (or L.O.R.D.)  Players would put a lot of effort into outdoing each other, going so far as to log on at particular times of day and in particular ways in order to  gain strategic advantage.

Some members preferred to hang out on the message base and talk about local goings-on like the weather, what was on T.V. and where to get things in the D.C. area. (Note to folks who've never used a dialup BBS: bulletin board message bases are similar to Usenet or an email listserv.

Perennial message base favorites were current events and politics, computer information and gaming, jokes, and popular music.

Technology being what it is, in 1995 the current sysop (SYStemOPerator) of Crunchland, DSF, decided along with the users that it had become time to take the BBS into the future with the help of the Ultimate Bulletin Board BBS web-conversion software.  We of Crunchland think the original community flavor of the dialup BBS has been retained, along with a few new twists like user HTML programming training modules, individual user pages, and links to Internet sites.

DSF does all the software and upgrades in his free time and at something of a financial loss to himself. Go here to find out where to submit a cash contribution.  Users are also asked to contribute link suggestions, new topics of conversation, and recipes to the website as they are able.
