Anarchy & SubversionAnother Chinese Import to Avoid : Hair Bands According to snopes, it's true ... some chinese hairbands imported into the US are made from recycled condoms. Sports TalkBreakfast at Wimbledon Yesterday's women's final was great and all but today is really what I have been waiting for. Who can beat Rafa Nadal v. Roger Federer? No one. If the weather would cooperate, I will be very happy. I want to see Federer beat Sampras' record but it is awfully hard to not want Nadal to win. I just hope it goes more than three sets. more >> started by calvin on July 06 2008. It has 5 replies, and johnny anonymous made the most recent one at 07:21 PM on 07-18-2008. |
Tell Me Something I Don't KnowHow Does Your Garden Grow? (was: Aphid infestation) ARGH. As i've posted elsewhere in the food column, i've got tons of herbs. They are thriving. I also have eight different pepper plants...but I discovered something the last couple of days that has concerned me. The peppers (and only the peppers) are infested with aphids. Little teeny tiny, no bigger than a pin head aphids. I had noticed what I thought was pollen, sort of clear, sesasme seed things on the leaves. But then i realized that they weren't pollen...they were moving. And then there were eggs. And finally (yeah!) ladybugs. But the aphids outnumber the ladybugs about 1000 to 1. How do I get rid of them? How do I get more ladybugs? Why are they only infecting my pepper plants...? more >> started by Keevan on June 14 2006. Tell Me Something I Don't KnowDid you plunk your PDA? Few things in life equal the sinking feeling of a freshly submerged cell phone. But before you beat yourself up too much, know that it is possible to revive it without spending a dime. The activities of the summer season brings an influx of water damaged cell phones -- just ask Steve Harrington, the store manager of Wireless World on Holton Drive in Le Mars. "People go fishing with them, swimming with them," Harrington said. "We see a lot of damaged phones in the summertime." But the dangers of getting your phone wet aren't just outside. "One of the top five things we see is people who have left their phone in their pocket and it goes through the washing machine," Harrington said. "People also come in having dropped it in the toilet or in their coffee or tea." So after your cell decides to take a swim, what should you do? First, take it out of the water. If the phone is turned on, cut the power. "Take the phone apart and remove the battery," advised Harrington. "Don't turn it on because any water in the phone will short it out. Just set the pieces in a warm place." You can dry the phone by hand drying it with a paper towel or by using a vacuum. Using a hair dryer is risky as it may force moisture further into the small spaces of your phone. It is important to just be patient and to let it sit for a day to let as much water escape as possible. "If the it still doesn't work after a day, put the pieces into a Ziploc bag full of dry rice," said Harrington. "Just zip the bag up, and leave it for two to three days or even a week to be sure." What the rice does for your phone is it absorbs any eemaining moisture that may still be in the parts that cannot be reached. "Doing these steps are pretty simple and are 50 to 70 percent successful," said Harrington. If your cell still will not start up after all that, chalk it up to a life lesson learned and enjoy your new phone. ... more >> started by Demeter on July 06 2008. Game ZoneWii Fit I managed to get a Wii Fit when it first came out, weeks ago, and I've used it for a little while, and I have to say that it's pretty much a glorified bathroom scale with a television interface, and not a very accurate one at that. If you go into it expecting more than just a game, you're probably going to be frustrated and disappointed. And unless you're already pretty fit, the game is going to insult you right out of the box. The little animate Wii platform on the screen will grunt when you get on it. Then, when you enter your height, it will calculate your BMI, and turn your on screen Wii avatar into a fatty. It will also serve up a bunch of junk science -- stuff like "strong abdominal muscles help in proper digestion." I'm guessing something got lost in the translation. Despite all the hype over the Wii Fit, and people's inability to get their feet on one, it's just a toy, and their struggles to get one are probably going to lead to disappointment. more >> started by DSF on June 30 2008. ReviewsWall-E This is Pixar's new film, and the one to beat - if it can be beat - for this year's awards. It is animation, but be advised that it is not for children. Not that there's mature subject matter or language, but the movie was not designed for the short attention span of little ones. The beginning of the movie is dark - bleak, even. I was ferkelmpt, heartbroken. It's beautiful, don't get me wrong. The art and the animation are perfect. It's just that the subject matter ... Wall-E (short for Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class) is the only robot left behind when humans abandon Earth, and he works tirelessly picking up the trash, compacting it in his chest, and ejecting it in block form, which he then stacks as high as he can. Then, one day, a space probe arrives and ... Look, I'm not going to tell you any more. I'm sure you can get more info in other places, but do yourself a favor and don't go looking for it. Just go see the movie. Go. See. The. Movie. A+++ PS There's a chuckle after the credits. Oh, and the short animated film before Wall-E is funny as heck. more >> started by Demeter on June 28 2008. Anarchy & SubversionAP Predicts the Great Unravelling The AP News Wire seems too much like the Onion sometimes. "Everything seemingly is spinning out of control," which lists all the calamities and misfortunes that have befallen us lately, but the article points out that this isn't anything new. We've suffered periods of uncertainty in the past, and they've always been followed by more optimistic times ... "Of course, that doesn't mean it will happen again." Game ZoneAge of Conan So I bought a copy of this WoW-killer, and I have to say, I don't think it's all that. While the graphics are superior, the gameplay is pretty much exactly the same as WoW. The biggest difference in the battle structure is that it's slightly more complicated. In WoW, you click on one button and you swing your weapon, pretty much in auto-mode, and during the battle, you can click other buttons to perform a special move. In AoC, each swing requires a decision and a button push. Your basic attack can be straight on (2), to the left (1), or to the right (3). There are visual indicators on your foe that tell you which area he is blocking. If you repeatedly bash the 2 button, your foe will move his defences to block your attack, making it less successful. To do that, though, he has to remove defenses from his left or right side, so you can switch to attacking there instead. In addition to your normal attack, you have special moves, which require a key combo, much like the arcade fighting games. And these moves usually have overpowered results. All of the same character classes that are in WoW are available in AoC, with a few specialized subclasses thrown in. The big deal about AoC is the adult-oriented storylines. Admittedly, I didn't play enough to get off the noobie island you begin with, but I didn't find the stories particularly erotic. There were some especially buxom NPCs to deal with, but from what I could tell, the mature content seems extreme enough to titillate a 14-year-old, and maybe not even that. In the end, my account will close when the 30-day free trial ends. I didn't find the gameplay, storyline, or playing experience worth enough to pay $15 a month for it. more >> started by DSF on June 11 2008. PoliticsObama and bitter I lived in Pittsburgh for many years and Latrobe Pennsylvania for years and passed through many more factory towns in in PA. (And also in Michigan!) When I lived there it was almost a nightly thing to turn on the local news and hear of a factory closing --no exaggeration. What Obama said is just plain true. When the factory closes that the whole town survived on, 'some' people did get bitter and turn towards darker things. I saw it happen. It sickens me to watch McCain and others milk this for all its worth when they know there's truth in it. Talk about a tempest in a teapot. I've been a Hillary supporter so far but this political circus over the bitter remark is making me wonder. If you doubt, I suggest you drive through a dead factory town, as I have more times than I could ever count. more >> started by Quest on April 14 2008.
