Well, saying Libby ruined someone's career just plays into the talking points of the republican apologists. I saw several on the morning talk shows, and that seemed to be the party line in an effort to downplay the actions of the President. Libby did not ruin anyone's career. What Libby did was lie to investigators. That's all he did. And that's bad enough to warrant the charges and the penalty he was given.

It's not like he was fucking around or anything. He just lied to some federal prosecutors. Who wouldn't do that?

So, all you Capitol Hill folks, has there been a groundswell of opposition to the Libby commutation?

The worst aspect of partisan politics is its inability to rise above the "well, you did this!" retorts.Someday, in a brave new world, the country will be run by people who rise to loftier, grand ideals, rather than sink to the lows of their predecessors, and think that somehow justifies their sniveling crappiness. That said, George Bush is completely within his constitutional rights to show preference to his cronies, and absolve them of all of their sins. And we all know that had Scooter spent any time in jail, he would have been squealing like a stuck pig ... in more ways than one.

Hmm. Scooter is in the unhealthy position of knowing too much. It is possible that the stress of this position could get to him and he would be driven to commit suicide. You know, shoot himself in the back a few times ...

DSF, I wasn't trying to say, 'well Clinton did it too."I was simply saying that this is what Presidents do. Ford pardoned Nixon. It's jus the way things are. Which is why I find most politicians (with apologies to those that work in the field) abhorrent, especially those who occupy the White House.

He has not been officially pardoned, yet. He will be but not only is this what presidents do but it is what a president is not running for office and is horribly unpopular does and why not? Am I happy that this guy, despite being the fall guy for Cheney but he asked for that job when he took the position, won't go to jail? Fuck, no. In the grand scheme of things, does it matter? Whether or not it is worse than other pardons seems to miss the point.Like most of America, I am just tired of all of it.

Doesn't help that there's not much hope for 2008, for a couple of different reasons. Depressing.

Don't get depressed, Nut. Look at it this way: people are going to expect the next president to undo all the damage that Bush has done during his time in office, and they will probably expect to see tangible results within the first two years. It's not going to happen that way, regardless of who gets elected. It is highly likely that whoever gets elected in 2008 will not be re-elected to a second term and will give his party a black eye. Do you want this person to be a Democrat?

I am not a member of any organized political party. I am a Democrat. He was right then...and still is.

from your mouth to God's ears, calvin. I think my concerns are mostly lack of ballot integrity and failure of the Dems to compete on the ground in a slew of states.
